Assessing unpaid care work: a participatory toolkit
This participatory toolkit sets out practical methods for understanding unpaid care work and how it is distributed within local communities and families. Together the tools provide a way of ascertaining and capturing research participants' own understanding of women's unpaid care work.
The tools were developed during the Balancing Care Work and Paid Work project, part of the Growth of Economic Opportunities for Women programme, which gathered data across 16 sites in India, Nepal, Tanzania and Rwanda. They were designed for two main purposes: to understand community views and social norms around unpaid care, and to gather detailed information about how care work is shared and how it interacts with paid work.
