Change her forecast: How the climate crisis fuels sexual violence, child marriage and unintended pregnancy, and limits girls' futures (State of the World's Girls 2026)
Plan International's 2026 State of the World's Girls report examines how floods, droughts and extreme heat affect the health, safety, education and futures of adolescent girls and young women. It draws on the experiences of more than 5,000 girls and young women aged 15 to 24 in Bangladesh, Kenya, Peru, Senegal and Zimbabwe, alongside analysis of data from 52 countries over three decades. Nine in ten respondents said climate events were placing serious pressure on their family's survival, health and stability. Three-quarters said girls in their community struggled to access at least one sexual or reproductive health service, and half reported difficulty accessing menstrual products or clean water. More than a third had seen more girls marry before 18, a third had seen more unintended pregnancies, and more than a quarter had seen increased violence against women and girls after climate-related events.
The report identifies uninterrupted education as the most consistent protective factor across the data: girls whose schooling is disrupted are about twice as likely to marry young or experience an unintended pregnancy. It also highlights girls' own leadership in responding to climate shocks. It calls on governments, donors and humanitarian actors to keep schools open and free during climate emergencies, allocate a defined share of climate adaptation finance to adolescent girls' health, include menstrual products, contraception and protection services in every emergency response package, prioritise the most marginalised girls, including girls with disabilities and displaced girls, and put girls at the centre of climate decision-making. An executive summary (in English, French and Spanish) and a technical report are also available.
