Disability and violence against women and girls: emerging evidence

This evidence brief examines the intersections of disability, gender and violence, drawing on early findings on intimate partner violence from the What Works to Prevent Violence against Women and Girls Global Programme, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

It reports that in low and middle-income countries women with disabilities are two to four times more likely to experience intimate partner violence than women without disabilities, that disability increases women's risk of non-partner sexual violence, and that the risk of both rises with the severity of disability. The brief sets out recommendations and lessons from practice for meaningfully including women with disabilities in violence prevention policy and programming, including in how research and services are designed and delivered.
