Disability inclusion through infrastructure and cities investments: roadmap
This DFID briefing sets out basic approaches to disability inclusion through infrastructure and urban interventions. It opens with an overview of the barriers people with disabilities face when accessing infrastructure and urban services, distinguishing informational, physical and attitudinal or behavioural barriers, and explains the basic requirements of disability inclusion and universal design.
It then makes the case that infrastructure and urban development offer opportunity and scale for better development outcomes for people with disabilities, and gives practical advice on spotting entry points to integrate disability inclusion into programmes being designed or already in delivery. Entry points are mapped across transport, energy, water, sanitation and hygiene, housing and land, the informal sector, safe spaces and formal work. Annexes provide detailed examples of good practice and a generic checklist of considerations across the programme life cycle.
