Produced by the DFAT-funded Water for Women Fund, this learning brief reflects on discussions from the Fund's South Asia Regional Learning Event, held in Kathmandu in December 2019 and convened jointly with SNV Netherlands Development Organisation.

It argues that in the face of harmful social norms, doing nothing to challenge inequality does harm, so Do No Harm requires a proactive rather than passive approach. The brief encourages WASH practitioners to examine their own conscious and unconscious attitudes and use of power, and to frame harmful norms — rather than the groups harmed by them — as the problem to be changed.
