Evidence digest focus issue: LGBTIQ+ and disability inclusion

This evidence digest from the Disability Inclusion Helpdesk brings together the available evidence on the inclusion of LGBTIQ+ people with disabilities. It opens with a guest blog by Nu, a disability rights activist and founder of Revival Disability India, a digital media project on disability, sexuality and intersectional ableism.

The digest highlights how little evidence and guidance exists on the experiences and needs of LGBTIQ+ people with disabilities. What evidence there is shows they face multiple and intersecting discrimination based on both disability and sexual orientation, gender identity, expression or sex characteristics, creating barriers to education, employment, healthcare and participation in society, with consequences for mental health and wellbeing. The digest also covers other areas of disability inclusion, including accessibility, assistive technology, climate change, safeguarding, and the impact of the war in Ukraine on people with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities.
