This report reframes the ‘just transition’ from the perspective of care workers. It argues that transition strategies have so far focused narrowly on formal industrial jobs in energy, manufacturing and transport, while paying limited attention to care work and its centrality to meeting human needs and protecting the environment. Drawing on feminist, peasant, Indigenous and environmental justice critiques, it sets out an expanded vision of just transition that values both decent green jobs and the households, communities, land, water and public services that sustain life.

The report draws on an international ‘workers’ inquiry’ spanning domestic and community care, peasant and Indigenous food provisioning, environmental care, health care and education, gathering care workers’ own perspectives on the social and ecological challenges they face. It concludes that, to protect people and the planet, just transition policies must properly recognise and adequately fund care work in all its forms.
