Poverty, gender and displacement: a policy brief
This policy brief presents findings from the World Bank's Gender Dimensions of Forced Displacement research programme on how poverty intersects with gender and forced displacement. It draws together evidence on the economic circumstances of displaced women and girls and sets out the implications for policy, programming and data collection.
The brief emphasises how much context shapes what works, whether the aim is promoting economic opportunities and livelihoods, extending social protection, addressing intimate partner violence, or improving access to services such as health and education. It argues that responses designed without attention to the specific displacement setting and the gendered constraints within it are unlikely to reach the poorest displaced women.
